Geospatial Analyst

Geospatial Analyst  (W-2 or 1099 position)
Company: Olive Consulting
Location: Rockville, MD

About Us
Olive Consulting is a dynamic and innovative technology and business management firm committed to delivering strategic solutions for our clients. We specialize in IT Modernization, software development, data management, and cybersecurity. As we expand our offerings to include dedicated geospatial analysis services, we are seeking a talented and motivated Geospatial Analyst to join our team. This role will be crucial in building and delivering high-impact geospatial solutions that empower our clients to make data-driven decisions.

Position Summary
As a Geospatial Analyst at Olive Consulting, you will be a key member of our consulting team, working directly with clients to understand their business challenges and provide expert geospatial solutions. You will be responsible for the full project lifecycle, from data acquisition and analysis to the creation of compelling maps, visualizations, and reports. This role requires a blend of technical proficiency, critical thinking, and strong communication skills to translate complex spatial data into clear, actionable insights for diverse industries.

Key Responsibilities

Client Engagement & Solutions Design: Collaborate with clients to deeply understand their business problems and translate them into technical requirements for geospatial solutions, including those involving predictive modeling and machine learning.

* Advanced Data Analysis: Utilize a modern data science approach to perform spatial and statistical analysis. This includes data manipulation, cleaning, and exploration using Python and its geospatial libraries (e.g., GeoPandas, Shapely, PySAL), as well as foundational data analysis libraries (Pandas, NumPy).

* Geospatial Machine Learning: Develop, implement, and validate machine learning and statistical models to extract insights from spatial data. This could involve using Scikit-learn for tasks like clustering and classification, or applying more specialized techniques for remote sensing and predictive analysis (e.g., predicting wildfire risk, optimizing site selection, or forecasting urban growth).

* Automation and Workflow Development: Create efficient and reproducible geospatial workflows by writing scripts in Python. Automate repetitive tasks, build data pipelines, and integrate different data sources using APIs and libraries like GDAL/OGR and Rasterio.

* Data Visualization and Storytelling: Go beyond static maps to create dynamic and interactive visualizations. Use libraries like Matplotlib, Plotly, or Folium to build dashboards and web applications that clearly communicate complex analytical findings and model predictions to a non-technical audience.

* Research & Innovation: Stay current with the latest advancements in geospatial technology, data science, and machine learning. Proactively identify new tools, techniques, and datasets that can be applied to solve client problems and enhance our service offerings.

* Technical Documentation: Document all code, models, and workflows thoroughly to ensure reproducibility and maintainability, adhering to best practices in version control (e.g., using Git).

Problem Solving: Apply advanced spatial analysis techniques (e.g., network analysis, site suitability, predictive modeling) to solve complex business problems.

Cartography & Visualization: Create high-quality, professional maps, dashboards, and interactive web applications to effectively communicate analytical findings to a non-technical audience.

Reporting: Prepare detailed and insightful reports that translate data analysis into strategic recommendations and business intelligence.

Quality Assurance: Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and quality of all geospatial data and deliverables.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative field such as Geography, GIS, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a related discipline.
Experience: up to 1 year of professional experience in geospatial analysis or a related role. A strong portfolio of personal and/or academic projects is highly valued for new entrants.
Portfolio: A well-documented portfolio of projects that demonstrates expertise in geospatial analysis, data science, and the use of Python for solving real-world problems.

Technical Skills:
Proficiency with GIS software, including Esri's ArcGIS suite (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online) and/or open-source platforms like QGIS.
  * Demonstrated experience with spatial analysis techniques and data management.
  * Familiarity with geospatial data formats and coordinate systems.
  * Experience with scripting languages (Python preferred) and SQL for data manipulation and analysis.

Soft Skills:
  * Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
  * Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to a diverse audience.
  * Highly organized with strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

What We Offer

* The opportunity to work on a variety of challenging projects across different industries.
* A collaborative and supportive work environment that values innovation and professional growth.
* Flexibility in work arrangements (hybrid/remote options available).
* The chance to be a foundational member of a growing service line within a reputable consulting firm.

How to Apply
Please submit your resume, a cover letter outlining your experience and interest in the role, and a link to your online portfolio or a selection of your best work (e.g., maps, web apps, or project reports).
