DoW HBCU/MI Summer Research Internship Program

The Department of War (DoW) HBCUs/MIs Summer Research Internship Program provides students and recent graduates from STEM and DoW-relevant disciplines with immersive, hands-on research experiences at DoW facilities nationwide. By bridging academic learning with practical application, the program builds a pipeline of scientists and engineers prepared to contribute to the Department’s mission. Participants work directly with DoW professionals on projects at the forefront of innovation, gaining both technical skills and professional insights that enhance their educational and career trajectories.

Beyond laboratory research, the program offers structured opportunities for participants to present their findings at symposiums attended by DoW scientists and engineers. These forums not only showcase participant contributions but also strengthen the Department’s scientific enterprise by engaging future STEM leaders. In doing so, the DoW HBCUs/MIs Summer Research Internship Program advances national defense priorities while cultivating a highly skilled civilian workforce dedicated to innovation and service.

Primary Objectives

• Immerse HBCUs/MIs students and recent graduates into DoW research initiatives to foster early-career involvement in defense-related STEM and DoW-relevant fields.
• Enhance the visibility and awareness of DoW programs, activities, and career opportunities among HBCUs/MIs faculty, students, and alumni.
• Provide program participants with training, mentorship, and career preparation, ensuring they are well-equipped for successful STEM careers within the DoW.
• Increase the representation of HBCUs/MIs graduates in STEM disciplines critical to the DoW’s mission.

2026 Program Details

Internship: May 27, 2026, to August 8, 2026

Stipends: $1,500 per week

Relocation payment: $900.00

Housing: Provided by the program

Intern Symposium: July 30 and 31, 2026

Deliverables: Poster, Abstract, and Program Evaluation

Eligibility Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship (no dual citizenship)
• Current enrollment in a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) or Minority Institution (MI)
• Major in a STEM or DoW-relevant academic discipline
• 18 years or older at the time of application
• Full-time student or recent graduate (December 2025 or later)
• GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
• Possession of a Federal ID, such as a REAL ID* or a valid U.S. Passport
• Receipt of a favorable interim background investigation
