Community Engagement Intern

Pay: $17.50 - $18.00 per hour

Job description:

Community Engagement Intern – Nonprofit experience with an emphasis on marketing 21+

About the Safe Ride Foundation:

We’re on a mission to end drunk driving in Frederick County. Through our flagship program SOS Safe Ride, we don’t just talk about solutions — we drive them. Literally. Now, we’re looking for someone bold, energetic, and driven to help us expand our community reach both in person and through strategic marketing outreach.

About the Role:

This isn’t your “get coffee and file papers” internship. As our Community Engagement Intern, you’ll be the personality behind SOS Safe Ride — showing up in the community, representing our mission, and helping us deliver marketing that keeps people safe.

You’ll run our event booth once a week at festivals, bars, breweries, and community events, engaging directly with people who need to hear our message. Plus, you’ll help our marketing efforts behind the scenes by preparing and sending direct mail outreach to local businesses, partners, and supporters.

If you can light up a room one day and knock out organized marketing tasks the next, you’re exactly who we want.

Responsibilities:Community Engagement (In-Person):

  • Be the “Director of First Impressions” at our event booth (must be 21+ for bar nights)
  • Engage, educate, and entertain event goers with confidence
  • Administer breathalyzer tests and discuss our ride service
  • Encourage safer decision-making about alcohol and transportation
  • Set up and break down canopy tents, tables, banners, and booth equipment (up to 50 lbs)

Marketing & Outreach (Direct Mail):

  • Prepare, package, and send direct mail marketing materials
  • Assist with basic mailing list management and tracking
  • Help ensure our messaging reaches local businesses, venues, and community partners
  • Support the nonprofit team with simple marketing and engagement tasks as needed

What You’ll Get:

  • $17.50/hr paid internship
  • 10–15 hours/week
  • 3–4 hour booth shifts (mostly Thursday or Saturday evenings)
  • Additional flexible hours for direct mail work (weekday availability preferred)
  • Real experience in:
  • Event marketing
  • Direct mail + grassroots marketing
  • Public speaking
  • Sales & community engagement
  • Nonprofit business development
  • Face-to-face persuasion
  • Leadership mentorship + networking opportunities
  • An impactful role that builds a killer resume
  • We’ve helped past interns land excellent jobs and grad school placements

What You Need:

  • A big personality — this role thrives on energy and enthusiasm
  • Reliable transportation to event locations and our office
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (booth setup is part of the job)
  • Availability for one weekly evening shift, plus flexible direct mail hours
  • Professionalism — you’re the first impression of a life-saving mission
  • Strong organizational skills (for mailing/marketing tasks)

This Role Is For You If...

  • You’re the kind of person who naturally draws people in
  • You want hands-on experience that actually means something
  • You’re studying or passionate about marketing, public speaking, nonprofit work, or community engagement
  • You want a role that blends high-energy outreach with practical marketing tasks
  • You believe in having fun while doing serious good

How to Apply:

Apply now and tell us why your personality, energy, and drive make you the ideal representative for SOS Safe Ride. No traditional cover letter required — just bring the heat.
