About the Role
Howard Shockey & Sons is seeking a Field Engineer to support on‑site construction operations and documentation for active commercial projects. This role serves as the entry point on the Superintendent career track, positioned between the Foreman and Assistant Superintendent, and plays a critical part in keeping projects organized, compliant, and moving forward.
The Field Engineer focuses on field documentation, reporting, trade coordination, and quality tracking, while also providing hands‑on support in the field when needed. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who want to build a long‑term career in construction field leadership and gain exposure to day‑to‑day jobsite operations.
What You’ll Do
Field Documentation & Reporting
- Daily Reports- Update, maintain, and manage Daily Reports by company standards. Track manpower, equipment usage, materials received, and daily production quantities to include daily progress photos.
- Daily Huddles- Lead and document Daily Huddles when HSS craft employees are onsite.
- Action Items / Pre-installation Meetings- Ensure action items are created once subcontracts are executed. Manage action item process to ensure all documents are uploaded and signed off by associated parties. Once signed off, create Preconstruction meeting agenda with assistance of project superintendent. Assist in conducting preconstruction meetings and ensure accurate meeting notes are documented once complete.
- Safety- Assist in performing and documenting project safety inspections and ensuring violations are promptly resolved.
- Quality control- Assist in performing/ documenting initial, follow up, and final inspections of work throughout project duration.
- Subcontractor Meetings- Develop Subcontractor Meeting Agenda with assistance of Project Superintendent. Assist in conducting subcontractor meetings and ensure accurate meeting notes are documented once complete.
- Schedule- Assist Superintendent in updating project schedule construction activities to include Monthly Progress updates and 3 weeks look ahead.
Coordination & Communication
- Support the Assistant Superintendent/ Superintendent in coordinating field activities and logistics.
- Communicate real time updates from the field to Assistant Superintendent/ Superintendent as issues arise
- Act as a liaison between Foremen, project engineers, and office staff to ensure timely flow of information.
Compliance, Quality & Punch List Support
- Monitor and record safety compliance activities (toolbox talks, JHAs, sign-in sheets, safety audits).
- Track inspections and testing reports, ensuring documentation is submitted and filed properly.
- Support quality control processes by collecting and maintaining inspection records.
- Observation and Final Punch List Management:
- Assist in creating, assigning, distributing, and tracking Observation Log throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure all deficiency to include those noted by 3rd party inspection agency and Owner/ Architect are tracked via Observation Log.
- Coordinate with subcontractors to ensure timely completion of all open Observations throughout the life of the project.
- Document Observation resolution with photos, status updates, and follow-up logs.
- Participate in walkthroughs with the project team, owners, and design representatives as needed.
- Maintain the Observation log database/software, ensuring all items are current and accurately closed out.
- Support final punch list closeout activities by confirming documentation and completion of corrective work prior to turnover.
Administrative, Logistical & Field Support
- Assist in tracking deliveries and maintaining delivery logs.
- Verify timesheets, equipment logs, and material tickets against daily reports.
- Provide administrative support to the field team including scheduling of meetings, preparing reports, and updating project trackers.
- Perform hands-on work as needed in the field, assisting crews with light tasks, materials handling, and site readiness.
Other duties may be assigned.
What We’re Looking For
Education & Experience
- 2–4 years of construction field experience and/or
- 2–4 years of higher education (associate or bachelor’s degree in construction‑related field)
Skills & Qualifications
- Familiarity with construction processes, safety practices, and documentation standards
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with Procore, ProjectSight, e‑Builder, or Kahua is a plus
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across field and office teams
- Ability to read and interpret basic construction drawings and specifications
Physical & Work Environment
- Work performed on active construction sites with exposure to outdoor weather conditions
- Ability to walk, stand, climb ladders or stairs, and lift 50+ lbs. as required
- Hands‑on field activity may be required to support crew operations
