Montgomery County Firefighter/Rescuer

Montgomery County Firefighter/Rescuers perform manual and technical work in fire suppression prevention, rescue, communications, and emergency medical services primarily on a rotating 24-on /48-off shift work basis, which may require the highest level of sustained exertion and agility.

Candidates who meet the minimum requirements, as described below in the minimum qualification section, will be invited to take a written exam. Candidates will be notified of the scheduled exam dates and times via email. Throughout the entirety of the hiring process, most of the correspondence will be sent via email. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide a valid personal email address that is not blocked by IT systems (for example a school or employer email address) at the time of application that will remain valid throughout the hiring process. Candidates are strongly encouraged to check their spam email folders to avoid missing a communication. Candidates will be notified whether they passed or failed the exam.

The individuals selected for this position will be considered “Essential Employees.” Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave.

Before receiving a final offer of employment, selected Candidates will be evaluated and must successfully complete all the following:

·      Written entry exam

·      Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). CPAT certificates from other jurisdictions will not be accepted

·      Background investigation

Medical examination (including a drug/alcohol screening) & Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Fit Test. Candidates selected for hire will be required to sign an agreement stating they are tobacco-free both on and off duty. Failure to remain tobacco-free throughout employment with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service may result in termination.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

None

Education:

High School graduate or equivalent acceptable to the State of Maryland. Verification of a  high school degree or equivalent must be obtained by specific date..

Citizenship and Age:

Individuals appointed to a position in this class must be at least eighteen (18) years of age by a specific date. Individuals hired to a position in this job class must be a citizen of the US or a Resident Alien.

License:

Possession of a valid, non-provisional/learners driver’s license from applicant’s state of residence by a specific date.

Medical Exam Protocol:

Candidates must successfully pass a medical and  physical examination in accordance with established National Fire Protection Association standards. Candidates must successfully pass the fit testing requirement with protective masks and other respiratory protective devices. Candidates must pass a drug and alcohol screening test.

Candidates selected for hire will be required to sign an agreement stating they are tobacco-free (both on and off duty). Failure to remain tobacco-free throughout employment with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service may result in termination.
