Performs a full range of occupational therapy services according to professional standards. Screens clients, provides functional assessments, develops goals and modalities for treatment plans, and provides direct services for individuals and groups for assigned caseload. Utilizes experience in program development for specialized patient population(s) and by representing professional discipline on committees as assigned. Assists in training, orienting, and evaluating the performance of occupational therapy interns and volunteers.
What to expect
The Adult Residential Treatment Center (RTC) provides services for persons ages 18 and older with serious mental illness, including individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders or development disabilities. Our teams craft individualized plans for the residents to reach the highest level of recovery possible.

Assists in training, orienting, and evaluating the performance of occupational therapy interns and volunteers.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Contributes in creating an environment that values, empowers, enriches and supports patients/students and other staff.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the developmental needs of the client population and incorporates that understanding into the occupational treatment plan.
- Interviews clients and assesses their functional level according to professional standards.
- Provides professional occupational therapy treatment/services to individuals and groups.
- Develops occupational therapy treatment programs that address the needs of specialized client populations.
- Provides consultation, instruction, and direction to other clinical staff, students, and volunteers.
- Supervises students and volunteers as needed.
- May provide orientation and professional direction to other COTA, or Activity Therapy Assistant positions.
- Completes written documentation of initial client assessment and ongoing treatment and progress through discharge in compliance with SPHS and program standards.
- Reports pertinent client observations to treatment team.

Pay for this position is determined on a number of factors, including but not limited to, years and level of related experience.
What we need from you
- Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited college or university.
- Current license to practice as an occupational therapist in the State of Maryland at the time of appointment and continuously throughout tenure in position. Maintains professional knowledge and skills through attendance at professional meetings, workshops, courses, and in-service sessions.
- Two to three years of progressively more responsible work experience in order to identify and meet treatment program needs of varying special patient/student populations and possess a highly developed sense of the professional scope and parameters of occupational therapy practice. Experience as a certified Occupational Therapy Assistant may be considered, if applicable.
- Work requires interpersonal and communication skills to relate effectively to psychiatric patients with a wide variety of problem behaviors, ages, and socioeconomic backgrounds, demonstrate understanding of the O.T. role and the roles of others in multidisciplinary treatment/educational team meetings, and teach patients/students, interns, and volunteers.
