STEM Internship - Spectroscopy -3256

Research Title:
Fiber Composition Detection for Textile Sorting via Spectroscopy

The work will entail:
This project is focused on advancing the textile sorting efforts as a part of the Circular Economy of Textiles program. The PREP researcher will be collecting and analyzing spectra for fabric samples with known fiber content, dyes, and finishes in the near-IR, mid-IR, and visible ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum. Near-IR spectroscopy has been previously used to classify unknown fibers and some fiber blends, but limited work has explored the potential interference of dyes, additives, and contaminants on the spectra and consequent classification process. Visible spectroscopy has been used previously to sort by color and can be used in tandem with IR spectroscopy to classify the color and fiber blend simultaneously.

The PREP researcher is expected to participate in all the research activities related to this project, including literature search, hands-on experiments, data analysis, and interpreting and presenting results.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Sample preparation,
  • Instrument operation (FTIR, microspectrophotometer, colorimeter),
  • Analyzing generated spectral data,
  • Making figures for presentation; presenting results at internal meetings,
  • Ensuring that results, protocols, software, and documentation have been archived or otherwise transmitted to the larger organization.

Qualifications

  • A current master’s level student in STEM.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0.
  • Ability to work in a laboratory with minimum supervision.
  • Experience with spectroscopy is a plus.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
