Description
The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering an Auditory Studies and Investigation summer internship at the Defense Health Agency's Defense Centers for Public Health - Aberdeen (DHA's-DCPH-A).
What will I be doing?
Participants will be assigned to one or two studies, and will participate on additional studies as needed, pending availability, based on their experience and interests. Participants will be under the mentorship of one or two principal investigator(s). Participants will be involved in study design, data collection, and data analysis. Opportunities for collaboration are available.

- Evaluation of notched-noise sound enrichment to reduce the functional impact of tinnitus
- Interaction between auditory performance and cognitive processing
- Studies using ocular and behavioral metrics to assess hearing difficulties not captured by hearing thresholds and to measure reduction in listening effort with low-gain hearing aids
- Effect of front-end processing on speech-in-noise and localization information for cochlear implants
- Effects of traumatic brain injury and blast exposure on warfighters' cognitive-communication abilities
- Developing integrated auditory and brain health assessments of complex communication in clinical and field environments
- Impact of TBI, blast, noise exposure and exercise on sleep and auditory function
- Improving audiological assessment for bilingual service members
Where will I be located?
Bethesda, Maryland
What is the anticipated start date?
May 27, 2025. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a three-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the provisions?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by DCPH-A. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Stipend Range: $4,000 - $5,600.
Other provisions may include the following:
- Health Insurance Supplement (Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE)
- Relocation Allowance
- Training and Travel Allowance
Security Clearance
While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DoD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.
