Powerback Rehabilitation

Recreation Assistant

May 2019 • Bridgeville, PA

What I liked

The staff is very caring and happy to help you focus and grow in your career. They are always happy to give advice and help you work through any problems you may have. The residents were really what makes working here special. They are always happy to talk about their memories and life experiences. The long term residents are the faces you start to look forward to seeing everyday. You work in their home for about 2 weeks and then suddenly you are family to them. Working in activities gave me the interaction skills needed to realize that I want to be a nurse and work in geriatrics.

What I wish was different

As a recreation assistant we are limited in the care we give our resident/patients. With that being said, you are almost strictly limited to only taking them to/from activities, maybe helping them hang a jacket up in their room and giving them water after an activity a few times. You'll want to take care of them, residents will as to go to the bathroom, or be fed, or even to change a shirt they got dirty during a painting session. However you are not an aid or a nurse and you cannot do these things for them and I wish we had the qualifications to be able to do this. The residents love and trust their activity assistants at the Bridgeville Rehab and they are comfortable asking for help from us. It's hard to say no, but you have to.

Advice

You get attached to the residents. Everyone tells you that you can't get attached to your patients, but I honestly believe that on some level you have to. If you are going to be working with them and seeing them on almost a daily basis, then you will become close and you will laugh and put smiles on their faces and you need to do this. You should know that you don't have to be the best of friends with them to do that, but being friends and helping them create happy memories and take care of them like they need and deserve is really what makes this job so rewarding.
